What it costs to start selling on Amazon.ca in 2026
Published October 8, 2026 • By Rujal Tuladhar
You have a product, a supplier quote and a stack of Amazon fee guides that do not agree. One says the monthly plan is $39.99, another $29.99, and most examples are in US dollars. Before you open an account or pay for setup help, you need the Canadian numbers in one place.
I run my own Amazon.ca store, so this is the worksheet I would fill in before listing a product. Every fee was read on Amazon.ca's pricing page or a linked source on October 2, 2026. Prices are Canadian dollars unless marked, and the sample budget uses my own labelled assumptions.

What it costs to start selling on Amazon.ca in 2026 at a glance — the short version.
Selling plans: $1.49 a sale or $29.99 a month
Amazon.ca lists two plans: Individual at $1.49 per item sold, and Professional at $29.99 a month, each plus referral fees. The $39.99 in many guides is real, but it comes from Amazon's US pricing page, where the plans are US$0.99 per item and US$39.99 a month. Register through the Canadian site and you pay the Canadian price.
Amazon suggests Individual below 30 units a month. The arithmetic says switch sooner: $29.99 divided by $1.49 is just over 20, so Professional is cheaper from the 21st sale. Professional is also the plan Amazon points to if you want to advertise, qualify for top placement on the product page or apply to sell in more categories. On Individual you ship at rates Amazon sets, even when the credit is less than your postage.
Referral fees: 15% for most products, with price cliffs
The referral fee is Amazon's commission, charged on everything the customer pays: item price, shipping and gift wrap. Most categories are 15% with a $0.40 minimum per item, including Home and Kitchen, Pet Products, and Sports and Outdoors. Computers and Consumer Electronics are 8%.
Three groups have a price cliff:
- Baby, and Beauty, Health and Personal Care: 8% at $15.00 or less, 15% above. A $15.00 item pays $1.20; at $15.01 it pays $2.25.
- Grocery and Gourmet: 8% at $20.00 or less, 15% above.
- Clothing and Accessories: 10% under $20, 17% from $20. A $19.99 shirt pays $2.00; a $20.00 shirt pays $3.40.
In a notice posted in late 2025, Amazon told Canadian sellers there would be no increases to Canada referral and FBA fees for 2026. The fuel surcharge covered in the next section came later, in April 2026.
Fulfilment: ship it yourself or pay for FBA
With Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) you send stock to Amazon and pay a per-unit fee covering picking, packing, shipping, customer service and returns. A standard-size item costs $5.92 for the first 100 g, $7.23 at 400 to 500 g and $8.49 at 900 g to 1 kg. Storage is $40 per cubic metre a month from January to September and $77 from October to December.
Two additions were not on that page on October 2, 2026. TechStartups reported that a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on fulfilment fees would start April 17, 2026 in the US and Canada, and Supply Chain Dive reported in July that it stays until further notice. Amazon's holiday notice on its US seller forum sets peak fulfilment fees from October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027, with the surcharge on top. AMZ Prep's summary of the Canadian rates, a third-party source, gives the same dates for Canada and puts the peak fee for a 400 to 500 g standard item at $7.65. Confirm the rate for your own product in Seller Central before you rely on it.
Shipping yourself avoids storage fees but not postage. Canada Post's small business price sheet, updated September 7, 2026, lists Expedited Parcel up to 0.5 kg at $9.68 to $20.80 depending on the rate code for your origin and destination, before any fuel surcharge. Membership is free, and until December 31, 2026 members get up to 38% off the counter rate for domestic Expedited Parcel.
Start-up items: barcode, photos, first inventory
Barcode. Amazon's beginner's guide says it matches products by GTIN, most often a UPC, which is usually printed on the packaging. A branded product you resell already has one. For your own product, GS1 Canada charges $26.25 a year for one barcode if your revenue is under $250,000.
Photos. A phone and a white backdrop cost nothing. For a studio, Jules Design in Toronto publishes a $500 plus HST minimum and says most Amazon projects come in around $600 plus HST.
Inventory. The largest line, and only your supplier can price it.
Brand. Brand Registry is free, but Amazon requires a pending or registered trademark. The Canadian Intellectual Property Office charges $491.06 to file online for the first class of goods in 2026. That matters because Amazon's headline new-seller incentive, 10% back on your first $70,000 in branded sales, sits under Brand Registry. Treat incentives as a bonus: Amazon's own pages show the advertising credit as up to $1,250 on one page and $50 on another.
Paperwork and tax before you register
Amazon's checklist asks for government-issued ID, an internationally chargeable credit card, a business licence or registration, proof of residential address from the last 180 days and tax information. The same guide says you do not need to be incorporated; you can register as an individual. Fees go on the card and sales proceeds reach your bank every two weeks, so inventory is cash out well before cash comes in.
The Canada Revenue Agency says you must register for GST/HST once revenue passes $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, or within a single quarter. Below that, registration is voluntary. This is general information, not tax advice, so check your own situation with an accountant.
A first-90-days budget and margin check for one product
The product is my assumption: a kitchen gadget in Home and Kitchen selling for $29.99, shipping at 450 g in a standard-size box, costing $8.00 a unit landed, with 150 units sent to FBA in October.
Per unit, at holiday rates: the referral fee is 15% of $29.99, or $4.50. Fulfilment is $7.65 plus the 3.5% surcharge, about $7.92. Amazon keeps $12.42 and you keep $17.57, which is $9.57 after product cost.
Cash out over 90 days:
- Professional plan, three months: $89.97
- GS1 Canada barcode: $26.25
- 150 units at $8.00: $1,200
- Advertising cap of $100 a month, my choice: $300
That is $1,616.22 with do-it-yourself photos, before freight to Amazon's warehouse, storage and returns. Storage is minor: 150 boxes of 20 by 15 by 8 cm take 0.36 cubic metres, about $28 a month at the October to December rate.
The margin check: you need to sell 92 of the 150 units to get your cash back. Sell all 150 and you clear roughly $1,019 before freight, storage, returns and tax. Sell only 75 and you are about $298 behind with half the stock unsold. Post the same item yourself at $9.68 to $20.80 and the $9.57 a unit becomes $7.81 on the cheapest route and a loss of $3.31 on the most expensive one.
The bottom line
The short version: the fixed costs are small, $29.99 a month and a $26.25 barcode. The real money goes to stock, commission and fulfilment. In the example, Amazon keeps about 41% of a $29.99 FBA sale before you pay for the product. Who should not bother yet: anyone whose product leaves a dollar or two a unit in that math, because ads and returns will take the rest.
