What a Shopify store really costs in Canada in year one

You are ready to sell online, you have looked at Shopify's pricing page, and the number on it looks small. Then you search for what a store really costs and the answers run from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands. Both can be true, because they are counting different things.

I run an online shop and an Amazon.ca store myself, so this is built the way I would budget my own: from Shopify's Canadian pricing page as it read on October 2, 2026, plus add-ons and the card fees on real sales. Plan prices are in CAD; themes, apps and domains are mostly priced in USD. The totals are my own arithmetic, so you can redo them with your numbers.

What a Shopify store really costs in Canada in year one at a glance — the short version.

The plan: $37 or $49 a month on Basic

Most small stores choose from three plans. Basic is $49 CAD a month paid monthly, or $37 a month paid yearly. Grow is $132 or $99. Advanced is $517 or $389. New stores get three days free, and Shopify says most plans then cost $1 a month for the first three months before standard monthly pricing starts.

That offer creates a quirk. Pay yearly and Basic costs $37 times 12, or $444. Pay monthly with the $1 offer and it is $3 plus nine months at $49, which is also $444. Without the offer, a year of monthly billing is $588.

You may have seen other figures. An April 2026 guide from a Toronto web designer lists Basic at $45 a month billed annually, while a Canadian agency guide updated on September 24 and a Toronto accounting firm's June guide both list $37, which matches Shopify's page today. Prices move, so check the date on anything you read.

Hosting is included, and Shopify says there are no setup fees on any plan.

What it means for you: Budget $444 for the plan in year one on Basic. Starting monthly with the $1 offer costs the same as paying yearly and leaves you free to stop if the store does not work out.

Theme, domain and apps: priced in US dollars

The Shopify Theme Store listed 1,299 themes on October 2, 2026: 24 free and 1,275 paid. Paid themes run from $100 to $500 USD as a one-time payment, and you only pay when you publish the theme.

Shopify's domains page says prices typically start at $9 USD a year, and its September 25 pricing guide lists a .com bought through Shopify at $16 a year. The guide does not state a currency; I have treated it as USD, because Shopify bills domains from USD.

Apps are where budgets drift. Many have a free tier: the reviews app Judge.me has a free plan and a paid one at $15 a month, billed in USD. The agency guide above estimates most stores spend $50 to $500 CAD a month on apps, with launch-stage stores under $100.

Watch the currency. Shopify's billing help page says the plan is priced directly in CAD, but app charges, theme purchases and domains are converted from USD with a 1.5% exchange fee included. At the Bank of Canada's October 1 rate of 1.4243, a $350 USD theme comes to about $506 CAD and a $16 domain to about $23.

What it means for you: Launch on a free theme and free app tiers, and add a paid app only when you can name the sale it will win. Read every app and theme price as USD and multiply by about 1.45.

Card fees on a sample month of sales

On Basic, Shopify Payments charges 2.8% plus 30 cents CAD on each online card order. Take a month with $5,000 in sales across 100 orders. The 2.8% is $140, the 30-cent charges add $30, and the month costs $170, or 3.4% of sales. The fixed 30 cents weighs more on small orders.

American Express and international cards are 3.5% plus 30 cents. Using an outside payment provider instead of Shopify Payments adds a 2% transaction fee on Basic, another $100 on the sample month. If you accept US dollars but are paid in Canadian dollars, Shopify's fee schedule lists a 2% conversion fee outside the United States.

Grow lowers the online rate to 2.6% and Advanced to 2.4%. By my arithmetic, Grow's 0.2-point saving covers its higher price only above roughly $31,000 a month in card sales on yearly billing. Below that, upgrade for the features, not the rate.

What it means for you: Budget about 3.4% of sales for card fees at a $50 average order, not the 2.8% headline, and stay on Shopify Payments unless you have a specific reason to use another provider.

Building it yourself versus hiring

Doing it yourself costs time more than money. The Ecommerce Development Pros guide puts a basic DIY store at $300 to $1,000 to set up. The hours go into product photos, descriptions, shipping rules and tax settings.

Hiring ranges widely. Shopify's own Partner Directory showed 4,745 partners for store build or redesign work on October 2, 2026, with starting prices on the first page from $100 to $10,000, listed in USD. The same agency guide prices a basic assisted setup at $3,000 to $4,000. Our own ecommerce build at Nova Toronto is $2,000 plus applicable tax, on Shopify or WooCommerce.

Who should not hire anyone: if you have a couple of dozen products, decent photos and a free weekend, build it yourself and put the money into stock. Hire when the catalogue is large, when you are moving from another platform, or when your hours are worth more than the fee.

What it means for you: Ask for quotes in writing that say how many products get loaded, who sets up shipping and tax, and what support follows launch. Compare quotes on those three lines before you compare the price.

Year-one totals at three sales levels

Here is the year added up. I assumed Basic at $444, a $23 domain, a $50 average order and Shopify Payments on standard cards. The app budgets are my assumptions.

  • $1,000 a month in sales, built yourself. Free theme, free app tiers and $408 in card fees. About $875.
  • $5,000 a month. Apps at $50 a month and $2,040 in card fees. With a $350 USD theme you set up yourself, about $3,610. With a $2,000 professional build instead, about $5,110 plus applicable tax on the build.
  • $20,000 a month. Apps at $300 a month, $8,160 in card fees and a $2,000 build. About $14,230.

On the last line the plan is $444 and the card fees are $8,160. The subscription is about 3% of the bill.

That is also why published totals disagree. The accounting firm's guide puts a beginner's first year at $4,000 to $12,000 CAD, counting ads, product photos and packaging. The agency guide's $7,500 to more than $80,000 CAD adds marketing, content and ongoing support. Mine leave out inventory, shipping, advertising and your own time.

What it means for you: Redo this list with your own average order and sales target before you pick a plan or a builder. Card fees, not the subscription, are the line that grows with you.

What the totals leave out: sales tax and traffic

Tax first. The Canada Revenue Agency says you stop being a small supplier once taxable sales pass $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters. You must then register for GST/HST within 29 days of the effective date, and if you pass $30,000 inside one quarter, you charge tax starting with the sale that put you over. Below that line, registering is optional. The $5,000-a-month store above would pass $30,000 in total sales in its seventh month. This is a summary, not tax advice, and the timing rules have details, so check your own dates with an accountant or the CRA.

Then there is traffic. Statistics Canada's retail report for July 2026 put retail e-commerce at $5.5 billion for the month, or 7.5% of all retail trade. The buyers exist, but they will not find a new store by accident. For a store with physical products, Google Shopping is the first paid channel I would test, because the ad is your product photo and price, shown to someone already searching.

What it means for you: Add an advertising line to your first-year budget, and set a reminder each quarter to check your last four quarters of sales against $30,000. Ask an accountant when you get close.

The bottom line

The short version: a Shopify store in Canada costs about $875 in its first year if you build it yourself and sell $1,000 a month, roughly $3,600 to $5,100 at $5,000 a month, and around $14,200 at $20,000 a month. The plan is $444 of each. Card fees are the cost that grows, and USD-priced apps are the one that creeps.

If you would rather hand off the build, our ecommerce websites are $2,000 plus applicable tax, and once the store is live, Google Shopping management is quoted per account. Doing it yourself? What does a Shopify store cost in its first year in Canada?

By my arithmetic: about $875 for a self-built store selling $1,000 a month, $3,600 to $5,100 at $5,000 a month, and about $14,200 at $20,000 a month with a $2,000 build. That covers plan, domain, theme, apps and card fees, not inventory, shipping or ads.

Are Shopify apps and themes billed in Canadian dollars?

The plan is priced directly in CAD. Shopify's billing help page says app charges, theme purchases and domains are converted from USD with a 1.5% exchange fee. Paid themes run $100 to $500 USD, paid once.

Do I need to charge HST on my Shopify store right away?
